Magellan (n.)
/mah-jeh-lan/
Portuguese explorer known for accidentally "discovering" the Philippines while trying to find the Spice Islands.
Went on a world tour: India, Africa, Malay Peninsula, and then caught hands in Mactan.
Died in 1521—some say by Datu Lapu-Lapu, others say his troops, others (like Filipino director Lav Diaz) say Rajah Humabon.
Historical symbol of colonial overreach and the first recorded case of getting absolutely wrecked by locals.
Usage:
"Whether by spear, sword, or a 4K-recorded high-definition curb stomp—Magellan reminds us: oppressors can fall."
Designs are illustrated by Siamese Rat, based in Cebu, Philippines.
About the brand:
Established in 2024 by Nikki Anchovy, WALAY BALAY (Bisaya for “no home”) is a label for those living in the in-between. Based in Montreal and Cebu, it collaborates with Hostile Youth Records in the Philippines to create transgressive prints that hyper-examine Filipino identity—its rituals, fixations, and colonial entanglements—in both the motherland and the diaspora. At its core is ORAG, a word without a literal translation taken from the founder’s Bicolano roots—signifying strength, fierceness, and a willingness to stand your ground. Proceeds support independent projects and hardcore shows in the Philippines.
